Life Legacy
Douglass, Elvera Ruth of Maranatha Village in Sebring, Florida passed into the loving arms of her Savior, on December 8, 2015. Elvera was born July 9, 1933 in Johnson City, NY to Clarence and Ruth Hayden. Her father was a Baptist minister in New York state and Michigan. Elvera attended Baptist Bible Seminary where she majored in Christian Education and where she met Walter Douglass. Elvera and Walter were married on June 17, 1955 in Bay City, Michigan. Walter and Elvera served in pastoral ministry for the next five decades in Michigan, New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania ministering in five different churches. They were blessed to have 4 children, Jeanette, David, Mark and Beverly. In addition to serving as a Pastor’s wife, Elvera taught in both public and private school. She was a prolific writer using her gift for various publications. Elvera was also a gifted musician graced with a world-class soprano voice, which was often accentuated by her abilities as a pianist and organist. Elvera and Walter moved to Maranatha Village in Sebring, Florida in November 2001. where she worked in the village office, as a librarian, and served in various capacities in the music ministry at Maranatha Baptist Church. Elvera spent the past few months at The Oaks in Avon Park, Florida, receiving specialized nursing care. Elvera was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanette Ruth Douglass. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Walter Douglass, three surviving children, David Douglass and his wife Christine of Avon Park, Florida; Mark Douglass and his wife Mary, of Stowe, Ohio; Beverly Richmond and her husband Stephen of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. In addition she is survived by her brother Vern Hayden and partner Oksana of Westport, Connecticut. And Elvera is also survived by nine grandchildren who were her blessing and delight. A memorial service will be held at the Maranatha Baptist Church, of Sebring Florida on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 9 AM. Interment will follow at 1:30 PM at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
