Life Legacy



Father J. Peter Sheehan, Born Sep. 24, 1926; ordained May 26, 1956; died Feb. 26, 2018.
Father Sheehan, a Catholic priest and a native Floridian, died at Good Shepherd Hospice after a brief illness. He was 91 and is survived by 3 nephews and 5 nieces. He was born in Miami, attended Gesu School, and later the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
His college studies were temporarily interrupted when he was tasked to serve as a member of the U.S. Army Occupation Forces in Marburg/Lahn, Germany.
After college, Father Sheehan studied theology at St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore and was ordained in St. Anthony’s Church Ft. Lauderdale. He served in more than a half-dozen parishes in Alabama, culminating in the position of Rector of St Paul’s Cathedral in Birmingham from 1979-1991.
Father Sheehan had the honor to be appointed an Associate Director – Bishop’s Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs in Washington DC from 1973-1979.
During his life, he maintained a strong love for his family, his Irish heritage, and for his country. He enjoyed tennis, swimming, and was generously philanthropic to many well deserving organizations.
After his retirement, he moved to Sebring to be closer to his family. He was welcomed by the Pastor and the people of St Catherine Catholic Church, for whom he lovingly served in the role of an Assistant Priest his final 27 years.
Wake service will be Thursday 6-8pm at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Sebring.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday 11 am at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Sebring.

What a wonderful man with a spirit filled with Christ. With patience and kindness, he lead me to the Catholic church, which he so often referred to as the "mother church." How blessed I was to know him and all his generous life and spirit offered to each life he touched. He will be sorely missed.
